Anxiety
Anxiety wears many hats. It tends to present differently for everyone. For some it may present around a specific event such as flying or public speaking, while for others it tends to present in social situations. Sometimes the anxiety may be more generalized, where there is a constant feeling of overwhelm, a proneness to worry, and a tendency to view life through a negative or “what will go wrong next” lens.
Anxiety can chip away at our self-esteem, have us feeling edgy and urgent, stuck dwelling on the past, and/or attempting to predict and control the future. It can manifest at any age. Childhood experiences such as living in chronic stress, a chaotic or unstable environment, and/or with caregivers that struggled to regulate their own feelings can influence the development of anxiety. Navigating different life events, grief and loss, social isolation, stressors relating to work or academics and/or societal pressures can also play a role in the development of anxiety.
Anxiety can be incredibly isolating—tending to feel like we are at battle within ourselves or like we are “slowly losing our minds.” It can be very in your face—where you feel tense, panic, irritable, and/or a sense of doom. It can also go consciously unrecognized— going about the day as normal until the slow and quiet moments present and you find yourself struggling to stop the worry and slow down the barrage of thoughts, a persistent sense of nervousness and unease running as “background noise” as the day goes about, and/or feeling distractible and disorganized.
